National Night Out

Last night I was out walking the pup before heading down to the park for "National Night Out". I was stopped by a soldier in a vehicle with Alaska plates "Just stationed here" I thought to myself... He confirmed and said he'd only just got into town and was driving around looking for property he could purchase and rent out to others. He wasn't exactly sure how to ask - so what came out of his mouth was

"What's with this place?"

What he meant to say... "I've heard Tillicum has a bad rap - but things look pretty decent to me." When all is said and done - our ghettos are nothing in comparison. I explained to him some of the history of Tillicum and how it just depends what side of the street you live on.

But the people are good people. Down on their luck. But good people.

Last night I supported National Night Out by offering free books to anyone who wanted them. Communities In Schools of Lakewood provided hundreds of books for children and adults. A fun way to meet the neighbors and support the community.

We started out with only one face painter and the line kept on growing. Face painting started at 4:00pm... I jumped in to help at 5:30 and the line didn't stop until 7:15.

But how could I resist when the kids were so cute?

  2. wonderful post... you understand the nature of community well. A bad rap for some is a haven for others. And Night Out sounds like a fabulous way to spread love and awareness.
